Laos is considered by many the jewel of Southeast Asia, a timeless land rich in mysteries, the Shangri-La of Indochina stretching from the Plain of Jars in the North to the Boloven Plateau in the South. It is home to colorful ethnic minority tribes such as the Akha and Hmong, the town of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the elusive “Pink Dolphins” of the Mekong River.
Our journeys through Laos often begin at the Lao-Thai border with a cruise along the Mekong River on board the Luang Say barge, and an overnight along the shores of the Mekong. As we glide downstream, we stop at the minority villages dotted with bamboo homes and thatched roofs where incense smoke rises in front of the small shrines.
Isolated from much of the world, Luang Prabang, nestled between the Mekong and the Nam Khan Rivers still exudes a wonderful sense of peace, where saffron clad monks silently walk the streets in the early morning hours with their alms bowls in hand. The town of old Indochina is the spiritual center of Laos, home to thousands of monks and novices and over 50 magnificent Buddhist temples. Setting out on foot to explore the ancient capital is all it takes to discover the much sought-after glimpse of life as lived in a magical and strange place.
As the journey continues we travel south surrounded by mountain ranges and local villages until we reach the fantastic archaeological site of Wat Phou. Finally we arrive at the 4000 islands, where the Mekong reaches up to 14km wide. Here we settle in at our hammock in one of the stilt houses of the Eco Fisher Lodge and watch the water buffaloes and elephants crossing through the fields as the sun sets over the Boloven Plateau.
When traveling in Laos, you will be accompanied by our local guide Mr. Bousawath and a private driver throughout. Deluxe accommodations are available in Luang Prabang and Vientiane only. Itineraries designed for private tours range in length from two to three days which covers Luang Prabang and its surroundings to ten days which includes the Mekong cruise and Southern Laos.
