MoroccoAn Exploration of Sacred Music and Magical Landscapes

June 4 – 17, 2011 $ 4,180

Led by Joel Davis

This Morocco experience will offer a celebratory opportunity for those who are curious to explore the culture and beauty of Morocco and the sounds of Sacred World Music. The itinerary is designed to enrich the travelers’ palate with a variety of international sounds ranging from Andalusian Classical music to African, Asian and Moroccan Sufi while journeying across Morocco’s imperial cities and enjoying a visual delight of majestic landscapes and the spectacular Sahara Desert.

During the famous Fes World Music Festival, we will journey together through this legendary gateway to North Africa, where the music of countless cultures and centuries flows like a river through every street, mosque, and household, guiding listeners into its undiscovered inner mysteries. It is a mesmerizing tapestry of the ancient and modern, of the sacred and profane—a place that feels instantly welcoming even as its mystery deepens with each new experience.

We begin our trip in Casablanca where on the day of arrival the group gathers for a drive to the imperial city of Fez with a stop en route in Rabat. Fez is Morocco’s cultural and religious center, and one of the best preserved medieval cities in the world. We will spend our days visiting the sites of the city and it surroundings such as the old ruins of Meknes and Volubilis.  In the evening we will participate in the Sacred World Music Festival held at Bab Makina. After three nights in Fez we continue on to Merzouga, a small wind blown village in the Sahara desert where we will set out on a camel ride to the Erg Chebbi Dunes. We continue our journey into the heartland of the Berber culture to the “Magical City” of Ourzazate. Our next destination will be Marrakesh, a city filled with mysterious labyrinth alleyways where donkey carts pass by and snake charmers greet you at the corner. Our final destination during this trip will be the seaside port of Essaouria, a former Portuguese village that was once a holiday destination for such famous artists as Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens and Bob Marley.

The trip price of $ 4,180 includes accommodations in 4 star luxury riads or hotels and bivouac tents in the Sahara, breakfast daily and meals as listed in the detailed itinerary, transportation in luxury mini-bus, service of historical guide throughout, entrance fees to local sites, two tickets to the Fes World Sacred Music Festival, camel trek in the Sahara, and talks on World Sacred Music by Joel Davis, a world music producer who has recorded the Fes Festival for many years.
